Cycling Safely Around Wildlife in Southern Illinois

A few years ago during the superman ride we were headed out of Joppa and I was on the front taking a pull and a squirrel met his fate running under my front wheel and go kicked up onto the rider behind me. Felt bad, but that's the worst I've had. I've had more issues with the bipedal wildlife in...

What cycling gear did you buy last?

Have you looked at black bibs? They're a pretty good company for moderately good quality products for a good price. I've had some bibs from there for a few years. They're just now starting to wear. Also the last thing i bought was a skin suit from there.

    Electronic everything...

E-shifting is fine, especially with axs. It simply works and is more consistent than mechanical cables, however the maintainence is a bit more. E-braking, i'll take a pass on that. Hydraulics are a proven method for brake actuation, so that I'm fine with. As for "losing traditional bikes", it...

Fueling Your Ride: Best Nutrition Practices for Cyclists

I'm so bad at this. Before riding I try to get atleast a decent meal in 2 hours prior. During, i throw in whatever because I'm burning. After, protien is big, but mostly I'm just trying to get fuel in to recover for tomorrows ride.

Tips for Training for Your First Cycling Race

Although I agree with all of these things. Unless you have some experience under the belt these things can be daunting. My tips for first race are: First and foremost, bike racing is HARD! We train so hard just to suck and finish midpack (maybe). Temper expectations. For any race, it goes...

    What type of portable pump?

I d a lot of traveling with my bike and kit. I've managed to be able to get to a spot about an hour early, be able to get everything I need to be able to perform well within that time. Not fast but considering 20-40 minutes of that is warming up it's not bad.

What's the fastest you've ever rode on your bike?

I just did 44MPH going downhill in the mountains in VA. The road was nice and smooth, so i was loving life (especially after the 3.5mph avg 50 minute climb). I was taking it easy and braking into every blind corner. Would love to go faster.

    What type of portable pump?

So I used a manual floor pump for the first 7 years of riding. I recently bought a electric pump (Fanttik X8) and I won't be going back. It packs nicely into my to-go bag for racing/riding, and although it's not as fast as a floor pump, I'm typically not running late for rides. (If your on time...

What's your cycling goal this year?

Of course. At least 6000 miles, win a pair of state champs (starts this weekend), and get atleast 1 multiday bikepacking trip done.

What all bikes do you have and what's next on the list?

It's by far the most "multisport" you're going to get while racing a pure bike race. Big Shark in St Louis puts on a great series that runs weekly in the area. Lots of good beginner friendly courses...

Do you compete with your friends?

The challenge becomes frequency of testing for comparison. Physiological changes don't happen that fast. Especially if you've been riding a while.

What all bikes do you have and what's next on the list?

I mean I rode a CX bike for a gravel bike for years. Now gravel bikes are super capable and are more reminiscent of 90s MTBs with drop bars. Not necessarily a bad thing, especially if you have an old frame you can build up

Do you compete with your friends?

I honestly try not to compete unless it's a race, so I guess weekly during our "crit simulation ride" I compete. To be honest though, things like local legends/KOMs aren't my thing. Most of the time I'm competing with myself

Brave soul you are. I will not ride when it's that cold.
