Lobbying for more bike trails.

We need more dedicated bike trails. The recently passed Infrastructure Act has many provisions for including help in financing such trails. Moreover, IDOT is presently building a dedicated trail that parallels HWY 13 from Carbondale to Marion with a branch that ties into the Crab Orchard bike trail.

The mayor of Brookport, Rance Phillips, is trying to raise funds to build a trail along the levee wall surrounding Brookport but hasn't been able to get traction on it from our representatives in Springfield. Such a trail could eventually tie into the Tunnel Hill Trail in Vienna. Moreover, Mayor Phillips is working with a group in Paducah KY to install a bike trail across the Brookport Bridge that ties into the Paducah Greenway Trial which is presently being expanded near the construction of the Paducah Sports Complex.

If ever there was a time to organize and lobby for more dedicated bike trials in our area, now is the time given the funds being allocated by IDOT and the federal Infrastructure Act. It's an opportunity that shouldn't be passed up.

I'd love to see a trail connect Brookport to Paducah. A separate bike bridge over the Ohio. Right now you can either take a chance an ride over the sketchy bridge (it is LEGAL to bike over it) or you have to go to Cave in Rock and hope the ferry is running.

I've ridden the brookport bridge, If they can get a shared use trail to connect that would be so much better.

There is a suggestion by the mayor to cantilever steel beams off of either side of the bridge that would support paved, dedicated bike trails on either side of the bridge. He's been collaborating with a group in Paducah in an effort to gain support for such a proposal.

Man I would love to see that happen!
