I’ve been looking at the US76 route. How is the traffic?

    RAIL South

I almost forgot about this ride. One day, 165 miles. St. Louis to Vincennes. I’ll be working rest stops and mechanical support for this ride. Maybe I’ll see some of you there. It’s a challenging ride. https://www.bicycleillinois.com/rail/south/south.htm

    Rain gear

I sometimes have to ride in the rain when leading bike tours in the summer. I have Marmot jacket and pants. Riding in the rain in Southern Illinois in summer is not a big deal. However, in north Wisconsin in 52 degree weather, rain gear is essential.

    How many miles in 2024?

Around 3700. About 1000 of that on gravel. Not bad for an old guy. Thinking about shooting for 6000 this year.

Should E-Bikes Be Allowed on Southern Illinois Trails? Why or Why Not?

There are some new regulations coming out from the CPSC regarding e-bike batteries. This should get rid of 70% of the cheap e-bikes out there. Only high-end battery systems (like Bosch) will pass. This might help to thin out the herd. Experienced riders who have aged up to e-bikes (and buying...

Should E-Bikes Be Allowed on Southern Illinois Trails? Why or Why Not?

In all seriousness, when I lived in Bentonville, Arkansas, e-bikes were starting to become a problem. We had a 45 mile greenway trail. I wouldn’t even consider riding it on weekends as there were people with e-bikes and electric scooters everywhere. Most with no helmets and most with terrible...

    Tunnel Hill Trail in Winter

Essential Skills Every Beginner Cyclist Should Master

If you’re riding in Southern Illinois, you need to be able to corner in gravel on a road bike. Even the good chip and seal roads have lots of rocks in the intersection.

Yes, I know two triathletes from the St Louis area who did this. They’re divorced now.

Will you ever go full e-bike?

I suppose that I’m a bit of a Luddite. I don’t even have electronic shifting on any of my bikes. And my favorite bike is a chromoly touring bike with cantilever brakes. Having said that, when I’m too old for a two wheel bike, an electric Catrike might be the ticket.

    Trek Checkmate

I went a a Trek factory tour in Waterloo, Wisconsin last summer. Very impressive setup. I saw a few Checkmates running down the line. One thing they told me was that Trek now has a lifetime warranty on their carbon wheels. So I haven’t quite ruled them out while looking for a new gravel bike.

    Trek Checkmate

That is some serious coin. I’m looking at a carbon gravel bike for next year. My leading candidates are Obed and Lauf.

    Tubeless

I work as a mechanic on several bike tours. While tubeless can benefit some mountain bike racers, these are pretty unnecessary for the average rider. Much easier to fix flats with a tube and way less mess. I’ve warned riders on my tours that if they are riding tubeless, they need to be able to...
